The Vilcabamba to Machu Picchu 5-day/4-night trek is a remarkable adventure that takes you through the stunning Andean landscapes of Peru. Beginning in Vilcabamba, a remote village known as the “Last Refuge of the Incas,” you’ll embark on a journey that leads you to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. This challenging trek offers a unique opportunity to explore ancient Inca ruins, lush jungles, and rugged mountain passes. Throughout the journey, you’ll be accompanied by experienced guides who will share the rich history and culture of the region. This unforgettable expedition blends the beauty of nature with the allure of history, providing an immersive experience into the heart of the Inca civilization.
Itynerary
DAY 1: CUSCO – HUANCACALLE – VITCOS
We will leave Cusco at 4:00 a.m. in our private bus, and pass by small villages such as Chinchero, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo on our way to Huancacalle. After ascending and passing Abra Malaga (4170m/), we’ll see huge snow-covered stones and then descend to La Convención, passing through several villages to arrive at Santa Teresa. Traveling along for another 2km, we’ll stop at Chaullay 1890m the point where both the Urubamba River and Vilcabamba River come together, and, after carrying on to the main village of Vilcabamba, Lucuma, we’ll walk through Naranjal, and arrive in Paltaybamba which is approximately 17km from Chaullay. All of the areas that we’ll be passing through are great for agriculture and growing fruit.
The group will rest and have lunch in Huancacalle at around 3:00 p.m., and then we’ll carry on to the archaeological site, Vitcos (Rosaspata), where we will also spend the night.
DAY 2: HUANCACALLE – JASUTINA – RACACHACA
We will leave Huancacalle at 7:00 a.m. and walk for 4 hours to Totora Huayco (1890m), where we will climb to the Jasutina Pass for about an hour, and stop for lunch. From there, we will walk towards Racachaca for 3 hours, during which we’ll have a nice view of the snow-covered peak, Lasoma, and our second campsite.
DAY 3: RACACHACA – PUMACCASA – ABRA MOJON – MUTUYPATA
Starting again at 7:00 a.m. today, the group will climb to the Pumaccasa pass, where we will be able to see the wonderful Yanacocha Lagoon, the snow-covered peak of Pumacillo and the Soyroccocha lagoon. We’ll descend to the Soyrococha lagoon, have lunch, and then continue on to Mojon Pass, the highest pass on our trek, where we’ll be able to see the snowy peaks of Veronica and Salkantay, and also Huayna Picchu. From here, we’ll descend for around 4 hours to Mutuypata, our campsite for the evening.
DAY 4: MUTUYPATA – YANATILE – SANTA TERESA – AGUAS CALIENTES
We will walk through the spectacular Yanatile Valley today, enjoying the hot waters of the Sacsara River and the variety of flora and fauna along the way. From Yanatile, we will take local transport to Santa Teresa (roughly 40 minutes) and get dropped off at a suspension bridge, where we’ll walk for 15 minutes to La Oroya, to take a second local bus to the Machu Picchu Hydroelectrical station, where we will have lunch. After lunch, we’ll continue walking to Aguas Calientes and spend the night in a nice hotel.
DAY 5: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO
Early in the morning, the group will take the first bus to Machu Picchu, where we will have a 2-hour guided tour followed by free time to enjoy the citadel. At around 1:00 p.m., we’ll take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, have lunch, and then take the train back to Cusco, where our representative will be waiting for you at the train station to transfer you to your hotel.
